PILL SWALLOWING DOWN TO A SCIENCE

By: Dave Gordon

Mastering a specific tilt of the head can make swallowing pills much easier, researchers in Canada say. After studying various head movements during pill swallowing, they found that pressure in the throat varies depending on which way the head faces. That means just a little head turn can make a big difference in getting that pill down. Most people swallow with their head straight, but the researchers say that a “duck shake” of the head makes the pill move back farther on the tongue before being swallowed.

The researchers have created a video to help people find the best way to swallow pills. It can be found at www.ucalgary.ca/research4kids/pillswallowing.
